Diet pills and vitamin supplements promise to help you lose weight and be healthier without actually putting in the effort to achieve those things normally. It sounds too good to be true, but who wouldn’t want to take a pill that could help them lose weight while they’re at work all day? Who wouldn’t mind paying a little extra for supplements that provide them their daily nutrition without having to give up the unhealthy foods they like eating? They sound great, but do they work as well as we might think they do, and is there a better way to lose weight and live healthier?

First of all, the main problem with diet pills is that they ignore the root causes of why someone is overweight. The foods we eat affect our metabolism, how much bad fat our body has to process, the kinds of healthy nutrients that fuel our body, and many other things. Simply put, our eating habits can tell our bodies to pack on fat or start burning it.

Diet pills also ignore the harmful effects of living an unhealthy lifestyle. Everyone knows that eating fast food and junk food and processed food all the time is bad for you, and gaining weight is one of the obvious side effects. Even if diet pills could keep you thin no matter what you eat, unhealthy foods deprive your body of necessary nutrients, clog your arteries, increase your risk to various diseases and health conditions, affect your energy levels, and more. Diet pills don’t address the other problems that come with fat and fatty foods.

Fish Oil Turns Down the Heat

Fish Oil often provides a safer and more effective treatment for persistent and degenerative pain problems with fewer side effects than either over-the-counter or prescription NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). While NSAIDS have long been the preferred treatment for the relief on non-surgical related pain, the safety of patients who use these drugs over extended periods of time is a matter of some contention. Gastric ulcers, bleeding, severe allergic reactions, heart attacks, and sudden death are some of the more serious side effects of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Fish oil, however, has few if any severe side effects and has been shown to be effective in controlling this type of pain.

During one 4 month period of time from March 2004 through June 2004, a neurosurgeon group in Pittsburgh asked 250 patients to take a total of 1200 mg per day of the omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil. These fatty acids are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). EPA and DHA are the two nutrients most available for the body to use. Salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, cod, herring, anchovy, and sardine are some of the best sources of these nutrients. Wild caught species of these fish taken from cold water provide the highest content of essential fatty acids. However, most people prefer to take a purified fish oil supplement when given the choice.
